Using bootstrap.dat to speed up initial wallet sync

When you first install the CandyCoin wallet, it will need to download the entire blockchain from the network. This is unfortunately a very slow task that can take hours if not days. To speed up the process considerably (or just be nice to the folks with tiny bandwidth caps) we have set up a server to automatically distribute up-t0-date bootstrap.dat files.

Some step-by-step instructions:

  1. Download the most recent bootstrap archive here. It will be named bootstrap.<block>.xz
  2. (You will want to download the archive with the largest block number)
  3. Unarchive this file (for example using 7-zip or winrar) and rename the uncompressed file to bootstrap.dat
  4. Stop your CandyCoin wallet if it is running
  5. Move bootstrap.dat into your CandyCoin data directory (on Windows this is usually %APPDATA%\CandyCoin)
  6. Start CandyCoin
  7. You will see “Importing blocks from disk…” in the progress bar (instead of “Synchronizing with network”). This shows that your wallet is updating from bootstrap.dat. Depending on the speed of your computer, synchronizing will take some time, but it is much faster that downloading the entire blockchain from the network.

Depending on how old your copy of bootstrap.dat the remaining blocks will still need to be downloaded from the network. The server currently automatically generates a new bootstrap.dat file every four hours, but this may change in the future.

After the sync completes, you don’t need to do anything – the wallet automatically renames the bootstrap.dat file so that it’s not re-imported again the next time you start it up.
